Specialties of the Verona area, from Vialone Nano PGI rice to local cured meats like soppressa, cheeses and dairy products from Lessinia, extra virgin olive oil from Garda, fruit and vegetables, and the king of the table: wine. Verona is the leading Italian province for the production of D.O.C. wines (10 of the 22 Veneto regions), and here you can find the best wineries producing Valpolicella, Recioto, and Amarone in Valpolicella, Soave on the border with the province of Vicenza, white wines from Custoza, Lugana, and Bardolino from the Garda hinterland, Durello in the Lessini area, Arcole in the lower part of the province, and Valdadige from the Terra dei Forti.
Other seasonal Christmas specialties include Pandoro di Verona and Panettone, usually garnished with candied fruit and raisins, as well as other even more typical, yet lesser-known, sweets from these areas, such as Nadalin with its unmistakable star shape, Offella di Bovolone, known as the smaller version of pandoro, Mandorlato di Cologna Veneta, Sfogliatine di Villafranca, and San Vigilini del Garda, lemon-flavored pastries filled with raisins.
Other specialties not to be missed include honey from Lessinia and the Garda hills, obtained from selected bees, truffles, and tortellini from Valeggio, also known as “love knots,” characterized by a very thin dough rolled out and then twisted like a handkerchief, containing a minced meat filling.
